Cooling Away this Summer

My mom and I recently went to a nearest mall in our place.  While staying at an appliance store in that mall, I was astonished to see quite a number of people flocking to a specific area only to find out that most customers inquired about purchasing an air conditioner!

Aparelho de ar condicionado

I must say that cooling machines like air conditioners, air coolers, digital and electric fans are very much in demand these days apparently because of the fever like temperature felt even inside a house.  Sometimes it can get very hot even in the evening until the early hours of the morning which I find odd since I thought that mornings should be much cooler.  This could be the reason a lot of people wanted to buy such air cooling machines to ease the summer heat.

My mom and I also joined the bandwagon and started asking a customer service personnel about some of the latest cooling appliances found in the market. Looking at those products, I noticed some physical improvements especially to the air coolers in contrast to the previous ones we had before.  I liked some of the redesigned ones which appear to have thinner body and not occupying too much space when placed in a specific area.

And then I saw an air-con like cooler which to me seems like a TV without a screen. I wondered if my skin would really feel some cold air from such appliance since the atmosphere is more different when in an air-conditioned mall than it is actually placed in a non-air-conditioned room. I was especially intrigued on an air cooler which emits a dew-like smoke effect as if I’m in a high altitude area. There is also a portable air-conditioner which to me is something new and I think a great thing to have but can be pricey.

On the other hand, I noticed some refrigerators near the air conditioners which made me look back on my childhood days. I remember to have opened a refrigerator quite a few times for a couple of seconds just to let myself be cooled. And these days, I found myself enjoying lots of glasses drinking cold water to think that I am not the usual cold water drinker when it’s a fair weather.

This comes to mind that every person has his/her own way of passing a hot weather. Most would stay in a mall for a colder ambiance or some even opt to eat a cold dessert like Razon’s mouthwatering halo halo!

Preview the Future Design of the WordPress Dashboard

The WordPress.com Blog

Though nothing stays still for long with WordPress, the design of your blog’s dashboard hasn’t changed much lately. While we’ve added new features and made some adjustments along the way, the dashboard has been looking forward to a refresh for some time. With that in mind, seven weeks ago, a scrappy gang of web designers and developers teamed up to explore how to do just that. We asked ourselves the question: “What should a modern version of WordPress look like?” We decided that:

  • It should have a simple, uncluttered design; free of excessive decoration and focused on your content.
  • It should use webfonts for beautiful, legible typography that’s consistent in every browser.
  • It should have a responsive design that’s tailored to PCs, tablets and smartphones.
  • It should do all this while retaining the familiar, user-tested dashboard interface that millions of users already understand.

Blogging For…

Why do you blog?

This is a great question since I’ve also asked that to myself often.  I may have missed blogging for a couple of days because of my so-called busyness still I look forward to visiting this site checking some new posts from other bloggers, reading news from WordPress.com news, and exploring myself in WordPress dashboard.

I must say I am enjoying every minute of my stay in WordPress since I get to learn many things which I never imagined the first time I tried blogging here almost two years ago. Blogging from Blogger to WordPress was a huge adjustment for me since I was used to a much easier layout. But since I heard lots of good things here in WordPress from way back then, I took a plunge and started blogging which also prompted me to participate in the Daily Post challenge thereby encouraging myself to post more often at the same practicing my English writing skills.

Then I took a break from blogging for several months and became preoccupied with pursuing other talents I am also passionate about.  I exposed myself with improving my singing, dancing which led me to participate in a cheer dance competition and singing in front of a huge crowd in a conference in our community until I reconnected myself with WordPress blogging where I still find myself continuously learning and discovering new things. When I am able to post successfully for a day, that feeling of fulfillment gives me joy.

Calgon, Take me Away!

As suggested in today’s daily prompt, I went to the third post that I see from my WordPress Reader which led me to WordPress.com’s Freshly Pressed: Friday Faves.  The message I got from the third sentence of its latest post was Forget Calgon!

I got curious and wondered what on earth Calgon by the way. Upon clicking the hyper-linked sentence, I was directed to a Youtube video realizing that it was about a bath soap commercial from 1980s! It’s understandable that I never knew about the product since it’s not a known commercial brand for me and to think I was not born then.

Well anyway, I liked the closing line in the commercial when it mentioned about pampering yourself in luxury just like the featured photo below. It’s like a modern take of cooling away in a bath tub this summer heat.

Summery Province Escapade

Cantilan Surigao Fiesta (66)

Village on the riverside at Cantilan, Surigao del Sur

The rustic smell of my beloved province, Cantilan, Surigao del Sur, which is also my parents’ hometown, brings back fun memories of summer vacations I had during my childhood. It’s a different vibe and feel since the air smells fresher in rural areas compared to the urbanized city I currently reside in.

I remember those moments when we had to wake up every day, very early in the morning before the sun rises.  A walkathon from my mom’s maiden house down to the nearest beach almost became a daily morning habit for my mom, siblings, my aunt and cousins.

And the good thing about waking up at dawn?  We were not only having our early morning walking exercise, we also got the chance to witness a beautiful sunrise especially when we reached the seashore!  For me seeing the sunrise first thing in the morning was one of the most memorable childhood moments I had. And it excited me all the more when I already heard and saw the slow gushing of the beach waves. It meant we can now get ourselves wet and swim. And that for us was already an achievement after our walk trip.

Being so young then just made me enjoy the thrill of swimming and playing in the beach. At first I was scared of going farther since the water gets deeper and the waves can be so high. But my mom kept encouraging me to stand tall when the waters become deep for me to reach. Then I would jump and just go with the flow as the waves come after us. And when I finally got it, I was overjoyed to have overcome my fear. When I felt like being pushed down because of the waves, I tried to swim forward and find my way up.

Because we swam often in the beach, I learned to swim in my own way. I watched my mom doing a frog style swimming and then I would imitate her after. In the beginning I was wondering if I did it right but as days went by I know I did but only for a very short time. Then surprisingly I learned floating which up to now still amuses me since I would most often float after swimming a lot and then paddle my way backwards.

And the best learning was when I finally had enough guts to swim under water knowing how I dislike soaking my face too long in the seawater. I especially found it personally fulfilling when I knew I can swim much farther than I imagined it to be.

Tears of Joy

For some reason I cry while watching attentively to a light drama. I get easily touched especially when I’ve known the characters since the series started and find them empathizing with the current situation they are both in.

Like when the nanny who has been looking after the mute child since she became one finally hears the latter talking was really moving. Though it was a simple scene and without being overly dramatic in their acting, I too cried with the characters as if I also knew them personally.

I also found myself crying when I watched an anime character doing everything she can just so she can save not only the world but also the person whom the small lady (or her real daughter from the future) became friends with. This may appear shallow to some but I found the particular scene where she almost broke down dramatically stirring.

Knowing the crazy funny side of the protagonists from the two different series, I came to realize that the goodness they have in them was the great factor why I shed those tears of joy. It may also be that I still appreciate the inner unique goodness of people especially those who genuinely care not only for the special people in their lives but also for others’ well-being.

Beyond the Cover

Book Cover - Write Here Write NowJudging by its book cover I must say I might not be initially drawn to read the book. Frankly, I am not familiar with the author since I got more exposed to reading books from other popular authors I know such as Bruce Wilkinson, Joyce Meyer, John Maxwell, and Bo Sanchez.

More than the cover of the book itself, I was interested to read Patawaran’s work because a friend has recommended it as a good read not only for experienced and aspiring writers alike but also to those who want to improve their written English skills.

Upon learning about this I headed to the nearest bookstore and asked my mom to buy it for me as a birthday gift last year! Since I have read lots of inspirational books, I thought to myself why not try something different this time.

What I find surprising when I started reading the book was it took me a day reading just one chapter. It was something unusual for me because I would finish reading a not so thick book in just a day or two.

I believe it helped that I took time reading every chapter in separate days because my learning was focused on a particular subject. Whenever I encounter difficulty understanding a sentence or paragraph, I would reread them until I can fully get the author’s message. It was like my mind has been retrained to appreciate another writing style, which I am not used to come across compared to my previous readings.

To sum, the book is indeed worth reading for me since I find it a learning tool to help me improve my writing skills. There is also a possibility that I will go over with the book the next time and I believe I would still learn more from it.
